Contents + Buildings = Savings

March 25th 2008

To get the cheapest home contents insurance you might want to consider an insurance policy that covers your building(s) too as big name brands are using the lure of big money savings to get you to take out a complete policy. But should you go down this route?

Supermarket giant Sainsbury's have been offering insurance products for quite a while now but have recently upped the gear in their customer acquisition efforts by offering 12 months cover for the price of 9 when you take out contents insurance and buildings cover at the same time. Furthermore you can enjoy additional discounts of 10% when you buy online.

This all sounds very good but where is the downside? Well here are some things to consider:

  • How much cover do they provide for your building and contents? It's no good offering superb cover for one and not the other.
  • Is the claim process the same for both contents and buildings cover? If they keep things simple and uniform then it is a good sign.
  • Are they price competitive when the initial offers and bonuses are up? Don't get lured in by new customer deals if they are going to end up more expensive in the long run.

Of course by taking out buildings and contents insurance from the same company it does make life that little bit easier with only one lot of shopping around to do and only one relationship to upkeep. So really there are plenty of good things to say about combined buildings and contents insurance policies and when you are considering how to organise you home insurance they should be kept in mind.
